Description

The Safe Ride System is a complete ADR 68/01 seatbelt warning system for Australian buses and coaches. It brings together the three things the new rule requires in one Australian-designed kit: an illuminated “Fasten Seatbelts” sign for the front of the passenger compartment, an audio module that plays the seatbelt announcement, and durable “Fasten seatbelt while seated” seat-back labels. It is designed to meet the occupant seatbelt awareness requirements in clause 5.8 of ADR 68/01 – Occupant Protection in Buses.

Bus builders need it for new models from 1 November 2026, and operators can retrofit it to existing seatbelt-equipped coaches, school buses and charter buses to lift seatbelt use now.

What’s in the ADR 68/01 seatbelt warning system

  • Illuminated Fasten Seatbelts sign – bright LED sign for the front of the passenger compartment, readable in daylight and separate from other cabin messages
  • Audio module – plays the “please fasten seatbelts while seated” announcement through the cabin, triggered from the bus’s positive or negative door signal
  • 12–24 V operation – suits both 12 V and 24 V bus electrical systems
  • Fasten seatbelt while seated labels – durable seat-back labels for every passenger seating position, included for all bus sizes

How this ADR 68/01 seatbelt warning system meets the rule

Clause 5.8, “Visual and Audible Warning Requirements for Occupant Seatbelt Awareness”, sets three requirements. Each one is covered by a part of the kit.

Requirement Clause What the rule says Safe Ride System component
Seat-back label at every passenger seat 5.8.1 Durable label, stitching or embossing reading at least “fasten seatbelt while seated” in Arial or Helvetica medium, letters at least 7 mm high, 1000 mm ± 300 mm above the floor, on the back of the seat in front (or the bulkhead in front). Durable “Fasten seatbelt while seated” seat-back labels
Illuminated sign at the front of each passenger compartment 5.8.2 Reads at least “fasten seatbelts” with letters at least 40 mm high. Illuminated LED “Fasten Seatbelts” sign
Audible message 5.8.3 Plays “please fasten seatbelts while seated” after each time the last passenger door closes, starting before the bus travels 500 m or reaches 25 km/h, and is heard throughout each passenger compartment. Audio module with the seatbelt announcement

ADR 68/01 key dates

Vehicles Applies from
New models of bus and coach (first produced on or after this date) 1 November 2026
All newly built buses and coaches 1 November 2027

The rule applies to category MD and ME buses and coaches. Buses with fewer than 17 seats, including the driver, and route service buses without passenger seatbelts are exempt. The change follows the June 2023 Hunter Valley bus crash and was announced by the Australian Government to lift seatbelt use on buses and coaches (Department of Infrastructure, Minister’s media release).

Who it’s for

  • Bus and coach builders certifying new models for 1 November 2026 and all builds from 1 November 2027
  • Charter, tour and coach operators upgrading seatbelt-equipped fleets
  • School bus operators who want every student buckled up before the bus moves
  • Fleet and compliance managers preparing for audits and contract requirements

Suits: Toyota Coaster, Mitsubishi Rosa, Yutong, King Long, Higer, BYD, iBus, Mercedes, Volvo, Volgren, Irizar and other buses and coaches with 17 or more seats and passenger seatbelts.

Why a bus seatbelt warning system matters

Seatbelts only protect passengers who wear them. Visual and audible reminders, like those used on aircraft, prompt passengers to buckle up every time the doors close. That makes seatbelt use the default on every trip and supports drivers, who cannot check every seat themselves.

ADR 68/01 frequently asked questions

What is ADR 68/01?
ADR 68/01 – Occupant Protection in Buses is the Australian Design Rule that replaces ADR 68/00. It keeps the existing seat, seatbelt and anchorage strength requirements and adds clause 5.8, which requires a visual and audible seatbelt warning system in buses and coaches. It was made on 9 December 2024 (Federal Register of Legislation ID F2024L01742). Read the full text of the standard.

When does ADR 68/01 start?
It applies to new bus and coach models from 1 November 2026 and to all newly built buses and coaches from 1 November 2027.

Which buses does ADR 68/01 apply to?
It applies to category MD and ME omnibuses. Buses with fewer than 17 seats (including the driver) are exempt, as are route service buses that have no passenger seatbelts.

Do existing buses have to be retrofitted?
Australian Design Rules apply to vehicles when they are built and are not retrospective, so the rule does not by itself require buses already on the road to be upgraded. However, state regulators, school bus contracts and fleet policies can set their own requirements, and many operators are fitting seatbelt warning systems to existing seatbelt-equipped coaches. The Safe Ride System suits new builds and retrofits. See the Bus Industry Confederation seatbelt FAQ and our state bus regulations page.

Is a seatbelt pictogram sticker enough?
No. The rule specifies wording: the seat-back label must include the text “fasten seatbelt while seated” and the front sign must include “fasten seatbelts”. Symbols can be added alongside the words but cannot replace them.

Does ADR 68/01 require seatbelt sensors or a passenger counting system?
No. Seat occupancy or buckle sensors are not required. A passenger recognition system is optional and, if fitted, the announcement only needs to play when passengers board.

What does the audible warning have to say?
The announcement must say “please fasten seatbelts while seated”. It plays after the last passenger door closes and must start before the bus has travelled 500 metres or reached 25 km/h.

Will the Safe Ride System work on my bus’s electrical system?
Yes. It runs on 12–24 V, so it suits both 12 V and 24 V buses and coaches, and the audio module connects to either a positive or a negative door signal, so it can be triggered when the last passenger door closes as the rule requires.

How many seat labels come in the kit?
Seat-back “Fasten seatbelt while seated” labels are included for all bus sizes, so every passenger seating position can be labelled.
