Description
The Break Glass In Emergency sticker (120mm x 120mm) clearly marks a breakable emergency exit window on buses, coaches and school buses. Printed in red on Class 2 retroreflective vinyl, the sign lights up under vehicle headlights and torch light at night, so passengers and emergency services can find the exit from outside the bus. Emergency exit marking regulations
Emergency exit markings on Australian buses come from ADR 58/00 – Requirements for Omnibuses Designed for Hire and Reward. Clause 58.12.3 requires each emergency exit to be “identified by a prominent notice inside and outside displaying the words EMERGENCY EXIT”, together with instructions or symbols showing how to open it unless that is self-evident.
- ADR 58/00 Requirements for Omnibuses Designed for Hire and Reward (Federal Register of Legislation)
- Australian Design Rules (Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts)
- AS 1906.1 Retroreflective materials and devices for road traffic control purposes – Retroreflective sheeting (Standards Australia)
- School bus regulations by state and territory
State and territory bus regulators and school bus contracts can add their own requirements, so check with your regulator if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Break Glass In Emergency sticker for the inside or outside of the bus?
It is an external decal for the outside of the bus. Its Class 2 retroreflective face is designed for exterior use and night-time visibility. For inside the bus, use one of our glow in the dark internal decals.
What does Class 2 reflective mean?
Class 2 is a grade of retroreflective sheeting defined in Australian Standard AS 1906.1. It returns light from headlights and torches back towards the viewer, so the sign stands out at night.
Which size should I choose?
Pick the largest size that fits the flat panel above or below the exit. Smaller sizes suit minibuses such as the Toyota HiAce Commuter, LDV Deliver 9 and Mitsubishi Rosa; larger sizes suit coaches and route buses with wide exit windows. All sizes are listed in the tables on this page.
Do I need emergency exit markings inside and outside?
ADR 58/00 (clause 58.12.3) requires each emergency exit on a bus designed for hire and reward to be identified by a prominent notice inside and outside displaying the words EMERGENCY EXIT. Many operators fit an external reflective decal and an internal glow in the dark decal at each exit. Check your state or territory requirements on our school bus regulations page.
