Description
Our internal glow in the dark Emergency Exit sticker with break glass symbol (400mm x 50mm) marks the emergency exit inside buses, coaches and school buses. It carries EMERGENCY EXIT lettering plus a break glass pictogram showing a hand breaking the window, all in red on a photoluminescent background that charges from cabin lighting and daylight, then glows after the lights go out. That keeps the exit visible to passengers in the dark or if the bus loses power. Australian Design Rule 58/00 requires emergency exits on hire and reward buses to be identified by a prominent notice both inside and outside the vehicle, and this decal covers the inside.

Where to fit it
Apply the decal inside the passenger saloon directly above or below the emergency exit window, hatch or door, where seated passengers can see it. Place it where cabin lights or daylight reach it so the photoluminescent layer stays charged. The break glass pictogram tells passengers the window is opened by breaking the glass with the emergency hammer. For the outside of the same exit, choose a Class 2 reflective external decal from the size table below.
Emergency exit marking regulations
Emergency exit markings on Australian buses come from ADR 58/00 – Requirements for Omnibuses Designed for Hire and Reward. Clause 58.12.3 requires each emergency exit to be “identified by a prominent notice inside and outside displaying the words EMERGENCY EXIT”, together with instructions or symbols showing how to open it unless that is self-evident.
- ADR 58/00 Requirements for Omnibuses Designed for Hire and Reward (Federal Register of Legislation)
- Australian Design Rules (Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts)
- School bus regulations by state and territory
State and territory bus regulators and school bus contracts can add their own requirements, so check with your regulator if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Emergency Exit sticker for the inside or outside of the bus?
It is an internal decal for the inside of the bus. Its photoluminescent face needs light to charge and is designed for the passenger saloon. For the outside, use one of our Class 2 reflective external decals.
How does the glow in the dark material work?
The photoluminescent pigment absorbs energy from cabin lighting and daylight, then releases it as a visible glow when the lights go out. The glow is brightest straight after the lights go off and fades gradually, so fit the decal where it receives regular light.
Which size should I choose?
Pick the largest size that fits the flat panel above or below the exit. Smaller sizes suit minibuses such as the Toyota HiAce Commuter, LDV Deliver 9 and Mitsubishi Rosa; larger sizes suit coaches and route buses with wide exit windows. All sizes are listed in the tables on this page.
Do I need emergency exit markings inside and outside?
ADR 58/00 (clause 58.12.3) requires each emergency exit on a bus designed for hire and reward to be identified by a prominent notice inside and outside displaying the words EMERGENCY EXIT. Many operators fit an external reflective decal and an internal glow in the dark decal at each exit. Check your state or territory requirements on our school bus regulations page.
